PROVISION OF 6 CLEAN WATER PROJECT, A SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT PLAN BY DR. OKWUN OJAH
Most of the population of Ohafia rural communities and its environs live a traditional lifestyle. Many are living below the poverty line with few opportunities for employment or enterprise.
Only 32% of the population have access to ‘improved’ water supplies and water borne diseases such as diahorrea and skin disease are rife.
Poor health hinders people’s livelihood and stops people from being able to fully participate in their communities.
As a Medical Doctor by Profession and Educationalist, Chief Barr. Okwun Ojah is in cognizant that clean water contribute much to health and good health is the essense of development.
Also remembering his childhood, that water collecting remains largely the responsibility of women and children who walk long distances to collect from springs and rivers. Furthermore, the lack of education within communities regarding sanitation and hygiene contributes to illness and mortality.
In his normal form of Philanthropy, he commenced a Rural Village Water Project aimed to improve family and overall community health and productivity by providing access to a safe water supply and reducing the time taken to access clean water women are able to contribute to the sustainable development of their community.
These villages includes Ebem, Elu, Akanu, Amaekpu, Okagwe and Isiukwuato.
At the completion of this project, provision of safe, sustainable water supplies will increase the level of awareness, increase the level of health indicators and contribute to sustainable development of the communities and its environs.
